He was a dark bay Masterpiece.
Deep chocolate brown
With small coal tipped ears
And three snowy white socks.
An eraser smudge of white
Above his eye
And a star connected to a blaze
Starting narrow and funneling wide
To wrap his lips
in a kiss.
He lived with dignity and joy;
A Masterpiece blend
of longevity
And temperament.
Appaloosa for soundness,
Thoroughbred for heart, and
Quarter Horse for sensible intelligence.
Although he is gone
His Masterpiece remains
In the memory of Jen
Who found and rode him;
And of Lori
Who soaked his beet pulp
And his sore feet,
Who loved him and,
When it was time,
Let him go.

This can be hard to do at time and when it is time to let them go we should but it is not always easy. Memories last in our minds for years afterwards and even when we let them go it seems they are still here with us

Annette. Thank you so much for doing this. It means a lot to me, knowing you totally understand what Masterpiece was all about. Even tho he was our first horse, he outlived 6 others and had such heart. Never complained..... A perfect tribute. And thank Brett for his sweet words as well.
This is so beautiful. All those of us who have lost a horse will understand and be touched.
That is so lovely. Most of us who have horses know exactly how difficult it is to say good-bye. It's difficult whether they are people or animal...death is something I will never become accustomed to.

This is such a beautiful poem, it brought tears to my eyes. I am an "animal" person and especially love cats, dogs, and horses. I found the name of your site intriguing and conjured up all sorts of living creatures, even Unicorns, when I first read it.
I came to visit as part of Meg's Blogger Ball and so glad I did. Really nice poetry. I will have to come back soon and read more.
I didn't realize horses lived so long - making it all the harder to say goodbye, I'm sure. That was a beautiful tribute for your friend of her friend :)
